What are backlinks?

In simple words, one website linking to another website is called a backlink. A backlink to any content is basically a signal that this website is endorsing that content.

Google looks at backlinks as votes, and the more votes (links) that a website has, the higher it will rank. The quality of a backlink is also important. For example, a link from Forbes is more important and valuable than a link from a new and small website.
